Have you ever wondered what all the dental specialties are and what they each do?

Well.... Today I am gonna give you a sneak-peak into the matter. 

There are conventionally NINE branches of dentistry. They all have different modalities of work and treatment.

1. Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery

These doctors deal with simple exodontia (tooth extraction) to the most complex of facial surgeries including severe head & neck trauma and other emergencies. They also correct various head & neck malformations (either congenital or acquired). Implants are also done by these surgeons.

2. Prosthodontics

This field specializes in various head & neck prosthesis building. The prosthodontists engineer and lay the pavement of fabrication of missing parts of the body, mainly of the head and neck region. If you need to replace your teeth or any other oro-facial parts then do visit a prosthodontist. They also do implants.

3. Oral & Maxillofacial Radiology and Oral Medicine

They dentists of this field specialize in treating a wide range of diseases.  With the help of various types of radio-graphic techniques they diagnose your illness. They are the dental alternatives of medicine doctors. 

4. Orthodontics

The dentist of this field deals with correcting malocclusion of teeth and other anomalies of jaws. They use a wide range of devices for their treatment. If you need to have braces then visit an orthodontist. 

5. Pedodontics

This field is solely devoted to all kinds of treatment for children. A child can get all sorts of treatment of the other branches from a Pedodontist. 

6. Conservative Dentistry & Endodontics

This field is for for conserving lost tooth part and other invasive procedures of the pulp of tooth. If you have a decayed tooth or need to get a Root Canal Treatment done or need a filling of tooth or need to make a crown for tooth then visit a dentist of this specialty.

7. Periodontics

This field is for your gums--- what we call the Gingiva. These dentists specialize in various surgeries of the gums, implants, scaling of teeth and root- planing. If you need care for your gums then visit a periodontist. 

8. Public Health Dentistry

The dentists of this field are engaged in various dental camps, school oral health programs, oral care awareness programs etc. They also have knowledge of  public relations. 

9. Oral Pathology

This field specializes on the pathology of various oral diseases by histopathological studies and other investigations concerning the diseased tissues.  The treatment plan of other dentists depend upon these reports.


Few newer fields like Forensic Dentistry and Cosmetic Dentistry are also gaining popularity these days.
